High Fidelity (2000)

wow, i actually got to watch a movie i had never seen before all the way through without interruption while working at the media center. i was sorting through the dvd collection there looking for something good to watch while i was "working" and this was what i came up with. i don't know why i hadn't seen it yet. i guess i just didn't get around to it.

it's about a record store owner in the middle of his life who is trying to decide where he's going with the rest of his life. mostly it's about his current and past relationships and how he deals with them. he's currently semi-broken up with a great girl who he might love, but might not also. basically he can't decide on what he feels or what anyone else feels either.

the really interesting thing about this movie is the constant talking to the camera that John Cusack's character does. it's interesting how he allows this "conversation" to interfere with the context of certain scenes, and it's also very funny. this has been done in many films and tv shows before, but i still enjoyed seeing it done by John Cusack. at least i don't think i've seen that before. he's a very funny guy and i think pretty much everybody can identify with him to at least some degree.

i just have to mention that one time when Leslie and i were watching some previews, we saw one that was supposed to be very dramatic. at the end of the preview, they were listing all of the great actors and actresses in this film one at a time. i think there was some orchestral music playing maybe and i think they were doing a lot of dissolves onscreen when they would switch between actors. something like that. anyway the guy forcefully announced that this actor's name is "Joan Cusack." not "John." no, we rewound a couple of times. he said "Joan." we laughed our asses off at that. if you didn't know, Joan Cusack is his sister. she also has a small part in High Fidelity. plus she's been in like half of his other films along side him.

so yeah, this movie's pretty good and it made me question my own motives for choosing a potential mate. i don't know if i actually learned anything about myself, but it was good to think about. so that's cool. plus this film actually mentions our favorite tv show The Prisoner (1967), which i've been watching tons of lately. John Cusack's talking to this girl who he thinks is really cool and he says something like "Oh, The Prisoner? You love that show? I love that show too. It's got what's his name in it...McGoohan!"
