Cowboy Bebop: Tengoku no tobira (2001)

i think i've figured out what's wrong with most animes. they're under the impression that things are better when only half explained. i'll agree that sometimes that's the case, but you can't make an entire film based on that philosophy. at least you can't do it and still make me enjoy it. or the majority of moviegoers.

this movie is part of the Cowboy Bebop series that my friends Colin and Czyz have touted as being one of the best things ever shown on television. well, i've been reading online that aparently the series is usually much cooler than this movie, but i won't be watching any of the series unless forced to. this movie mostly sucked.

it's about a group of bounty hunters living in a sort of half-assed futured. mostly it's just like the present. but they decide to take on this bio-terrorism thing that's just occurred recently in the city they're near and they get involved chasing this ex-soldier around town. there's a lot of pseudo-philosophical-religious doubletalk about the world between Heaven and Hell and demon people and things that don't really exist. but it turns out the virus is some sort of nanotechnology thing and the guy their chasing is already dead. well, sort of but you can still kill him??? it's junk.

there were some cool fight scenes in this though, and the animation was pretty good. that's the only reason i don't rate it any lower. it seems that the fighting in the series is all based on the fighting style that Bruce Lee developed called Jeet Kune Do. so that was pretty cool, but other than that...no.
