Being John Malkovich (1999)

this was my second time seeing Being John Malkovich. i thought it deserved another look since Adaptation (2002) was coming out. i can't wait to see that. that promises to be just as odd and ingenious as this film is. that film is also directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. but Being John Malkovich was nominated for 3 Oscars and is currently number 127 on the IMDb.

what's it about? hmmm...i guess the title is pretty descriptive. it's about a guy who goes to work at a freaky office on the 7 1/2th floor of a skyscraper in NYC. while there, he finds a porthole that allows you to get inside of the actor John Malkovich's head for 15 minutes. you see what he sees and experience everything that he does while you're inside his head. then you get spit out on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike after your 15 minutes is up...usually. but the guy who works at the office is played by John Cusack and he ends up falling in love with one of his coworkers who is pretty manipulative and tries to use him to get to Malkovich. and she also sort of falls in love with John Cusack's wife, played by Cameron Diaz. yeah, it's incredibly odd, but so so good if you can get into it.

i'm expecting wonderfully inventive things from this Charlie Kaufman character now that Adaptation is getting so much buzz, and after having seen Being John Malkovich a couple of times. and the sky's the limit for Spike Jonze. he also seems to be a budding creative genius. he hasn't done much yet, but what he has done has definitely made a mark for him.

so many good looking movies coming out for the new Oscar season. there's Adaptation, About Schmidt (2002), Gangs of New York (2002), The Pianist (2002), Nicholas Nickleby (2002), Antwone Fisher (2002), Chicago (2002), and Catch Me If You Can (2002). i figure if i go to see one each weekend, that should cover all of the big Oscar nominees. the rest i'll have to pick up later on because i'm not expecting any other huge successes. we shall see though.

oh and i am now working on a new overhaul of the diary. hopefully that will be semi-complete soon...
