Moll Flanders (1996)

and we now finish up with Robin Wright week with Moll Flanders. i wasn't really sure what this film was about other than the fact that it was a period film that had her and Morgan Freeman in it. and that's more or less all i know after having watched it. it's just a mediocre movie really. no big surprises or anything.

it's about a girl in England who was born in a prison. her mother was set to be hanged, but they gave her an extra nine months to live so that she could have her baby. then Moll grew up in a convent filled with priests that sexually assaulted the girls there. she was a very strong-willed girl though and always stood up for herself and what she wanted. she eventually escaped the convent and became a whore for the upper society men of London. eventually she falls in love with an artist and has a child of her own. the film is actually told in a flashback format from Morgan Freeman's character who is reading Moll's journal to her daughter.

this film was sort of decent but i probably wouldn't recommend it too highly. it wasn't very innovative and i thought the story itself was a little hard to swallow. a bit sappy i guess. possibly a few more well written characters and some more creative music, costumes, and cinematography would have helped as well. as it stands though, the movie needed some definite work.
