Message in a Bottle (1999)

well now at least this one does definitely have her in it. we continue on with Robin Wright week watching Message in a Bottle. a movie that could have been great had it not featured Kevin Costner. ok, he did a little bit better in this movie than in most of his other films, but he's still Kevin Costner and there's something that has never been quite right with that fact.

this movie is about a research journalist who finds a message in a bottle at the beginning of the film that has washed up onto the beach. it's an amazing poetic letter where a man has written to his dead wife telling her how much he loves and misses her. eventually Robin Wright's character locates two more of his letters and decides that she needs to meet this man. she almost seems to be in love with him before she meets him. a very well-thought-out romance ensues and it's not as easy as one might think with memories of a love so strong as the one that caused him to write those letters originally. it's very hard for him to let go.

aside from having a breathtaking performance from Robin Wright, this film also has a soundtrack composed by Gabriel Yared. i know i've mentioned that name on here before. let's see...Chocolat (2000), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Possession (2002), Cold Mountain (2003)...which i still have yet to finish reading...and The English Patient (1996) to name a few. unfortunately there were also a lot of contemporary musicians featured on the soundtrack as well, but it was all great music. it would have been nice to hear nothing except stuff from Yared though.

it's weird to see Robbie Coltrane not starring as Hagrid. he played the wise newspaper editor/boss/friend to Robin Wright's character. i guess Hagrid would've been a little out of place as a character eh?
