Quills (2000)

this one came from a recommendation from one of your fellow readers. although she hadn't actually seen the movie herself, she had heard that it might be a good one to see. my friends had said it was good as well, so i was getting it on pretty recommendation...maybe.

this film is the somewhat true story of the Marquis de Sade who lived and wrote and was insane in the time of the French Revolution (around 1800 or so for those of us who aren't so historically inclined). it tells of how he kept finding ways to publish his verbally pornographic literature even from the halls of an asylum for the insane. also, the ways he effected his fellow inmates and even the employees of the sanitarium.

i don't know, i have a problem seeing Joaquin Phoenix onscreen. i'm just convinced that he's a bad actor. i don't really understand how he gets the roles that he does. it's about halfway to Mark Wahlberg level...except that Mark Wahlberg doesn't get good roles. there's just something about them to where you're constantly saying to yourself "am i really seeing this person on the screen? why is that?"

anyway, overall this is a good movie. it's got lots of insanity, sexual references while still being intelligent, and good acting. i have no further comment. i'm sorry. but i'm watching another movie in like an hour, so i'll be more descriptive of that. maybe.
