Bugsy (1991)

from director Barry Levinson, director of quite a few mediocre films and just a few good ones, comes the final film on the Best Picture nominees of the 1990s list. look for my top 10 list to show up sometime within the next few days. Bugsy will not be on it.

this is yet another true story/biography film that was nominated for Best Picture. too bad really. not every one of these is that great. it's the story of the semi insane gangster Bugsy Siegel who basically started Las Vegas with his Flamingo hotel. it's the story of who he was, where he met his "best girl" and then how she got him killed by her stupidity.

for the most part, i didn't like the way characters are portrayed in this film. it seemed like a lot of glorification of a lot of despicable people with terrible values. now i'm not some angel or anything, but these people are just cruel and terrible. plus i'm not a huge fan of Annette Bening or Warren Beatty. i can't really believe that this film was nominated for 10 Oscars. that's amazing. bad story and the rest of the film was not splendidly creative. i frankly wondered why i was watching it. don't believe the love story idea that's implied by the cover (shown above).
