Stealing Beauty (1996)

i decided it was time to see more Rachel Weisz films from past years. one of those slightly older women i can't help being enchanted by. unfortunately she was only supporting cast for this film, and her character wasn't extremely attractive. most of the characters in the film weren't actually. each one was only slightly worth their while. everyone was fairly well developed, but everyone had a lot of personal flaws.

this movie tells the story of a 19 year old girl, Lucy (played by Liv Tyler), who returns to Italy after having been away for 4 years. she visited first when she was 15 and became infatuated with a boy who lived nearby. she returns to see if there is still anything there, as well as to find out who her biological father is. the place she goes to is this sort of semi nutty commune thing where all sorts of people who have a little bit of history with her dead mother are living. she has a time trying to solve the riddle of which older man is her father and it seems like everyone at the commune is overly interested in her virginity. a very sensual and sexual film.

the bad thing is that it's really inconsistent. it has some good material, but it just has lots of mixed emotions in it. none of which is overly strong. this film makes me think of a sheet blowing in the breeze. when you watch it it's kind of interesting and beautiful in a way, but then you get bored and move on to doing something else. so i guess this movie is the same. kind of good, but not overly thought-provoking.

an excellent performance from Liv Tyler, but unfortunately she has a very limited range. i don't think the other films she has been in where she tried to be something more than innocent and virginal have really worked for her. but like i said she was good here. Jeremy Irons was amazing. i look forward to seeing more films with him in them.

well look for another Rachel Weisz film coming up in the next few days. i'm expecting it to be a good one. and i didn't even know it existed until today.
