Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

be sure to hit the "previous" button today. lots of entries in the past 24 hours.

well my friend Leslie left a note for me saying we should watch this this weekend and i'm always up for another new Cary Grant picture. plus this one's directed by Frank Capra and ranked number 140 on the IMDb's top 250 rated movies today.

for some reason this really made me want to watch my new copy of To Catch A Thief (1955). i guess because it's Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock. at parts this film really reminded me of Hitchcock's stuff.

this is a comedy which is really over the top. Cary Grant comes home just before his honeymoon just to pick up a few things and let his family know about his rushed marriage. while there, he learns that his two aunts have been killing people by poisoning them and then burying them in the basement. he spends the rest of the film trying to protect his family from being found out. later on his completely insane brother shows up looking like some Frankenstein with facial scars and all (don't ask me). he even acts like Frankenstein in ways. yeah and apparently his brother's been running all over the globe killing people too. the bad thing is that he's interested in killing family members in addition to strangers. he gets really mad when people keep constantly saying that he looks like Boris Karloff.

my biggest qualm about the film is that i thought it was just too much. it went on for too long and the acting and actions were all overboard. it did have some really funny bits in it though.

i can't resist leaking some cool IMDb trivia for this film. apparently of all of his films, Cary Grant liked this one the least because of all the overacting. also, this was originally a stage play. when it ran for over 3 years on Broadway, Boris Karloff actually played the brother. i think that would've made the joke much funnier.

man, i hope i get up early enough to watch two films tomorrow. i have way too many checked out for this weekend.
