Raising Arizona (1987)

well, my mom and i were going to watch Trois Couleurs: Rouge (1994) this afternoon, but i took the tape out to put it into the vcr and it's Ingmar Bergman's The Magic Flute (1975). no, that wasn't the tape i wanted. so moving right along, we decided to watch Raising Arizona. a couple of the ladies at work recommended this one. plus it's one of the last Coen Brothers films that i had left to see.

it's another of their insane comedies. it stars Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter as two trailer park newlyweds who can't seem to have a baby together. best quote of the film: "Edwina's insides were a rocky place where my seed could find no purchase." and they can't adopt either because HI (Cage's character) spends the first few minutes of the film getting convicted over and over. you can't adopt if you've been convicted if you weren't aware. so they decide to snatch one of the famous quintuplet babies they see on the news and insanity ensues. everyone seems to come after them. many explosions and lots of whitty hidden jokes.

i liked the movie pretty well. this has one of the best openings for a movie i've seen in a long time. the credits don't roll until 11 minutes into the film. this also has the best metaphoric birth scene in film history. well, the funniest at least. starring none other than the great John Goodman.
