it was announced earlier this week that Natalie Portman would be playing a supporting role in a new film. yes! this film will be Cold Mountain. based on the best selling novel by Charles Frazier, it's the story of a man named Inman as he returns from the Civil War to his home in North Carolina. his journey seems to be very perilous and all he wants to do is get back to the woman he loves.
the cast has the potential to be very good. Jude Law, who is just a splendid actor, will play Inman. the three female roles of the movie will be played by Renee Zellweger, Natalie Portman, and it looks like Nicole Kidman will be the lead. i have mixed feelings about Zellweger and Kidman, but the other two will force me to be heavily interested in this film. plus the director is awesome. Anthony Minghella, you'll remember directed The English Patient (1996) (Best Picture) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999).
i might also try to visit the real Cold Mountain soon. it's apparently really nearby. i'm in Knoxville, TN and it's in western NC. hmmm....2 hour drive or so. i must investigate further. and what's that!?? they're shooting at the real mountain? can anyone say "extra"?
i've got the book checked out right now from the library, so hopefully i can start reading that in the next couple of days here and then post a review of that. more to come...
