Insomnia (2002)

just released today. i kept seeing this mentioned on the IMDb front page and a couple of my friends were interested in seeing it too. this is the new film from Christopher Nolan who directed Memento (2000). if you haven't seen that one, you really need to. like Memento, this one is independently produced. but it's hitting some major theaters because of its star power and because Warner Bros. is handling most of the distribution.

it stars Al Pacino as Detective Will Dormer, a very experienced L.A. cop, who comes to a very small town in Alaska to solve a murder that just took place. two problems. number one is that he's got Internal Affairs breathing down his neck and his partner's neck. number two is that there is no night in this town. it never gets dark because of the time of year and because of how far north they are. and he can't sleep without blackness.

i don't know. i get kind of tired of seeing Pacino as a cop. Robin Williams was great. he played his somewhat psycho character very well. he was perfect for that part. i like seeing him as a bad guy for some reason. Hillary Swank was also in this film but her character is very weak in various ways and she bothered me. apparently she bothers me in real life too cause i just got finished watching her on Conan and she has virtually no sense of humor. this was the first film i had seen her in though.

i think i was expecting more out of this film because of Nolan's great work with Memento. it was alright, but i don't think i can give it much more than a 6/10. save your cash and go see Attack of the Clones (2002) again.
