No Man's Land (2001)

this movie won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars this year. this is the film that beat Le Fabuleux destin d'Amlie Poulain (2001). how do you beat Amlie? you don't.

don't get me wrong. this film is pretty good. i'd say more like 7/10 material though. for one thing it's only 98 minutes, which surprised me because of its influential subject matter. it's a film about what happens when you put a Serb and a couple of Bosnian soldiers together in a trench in no man's land between the front lines. will they kill each other or become friends? well, i'll tell you that this movie definitely doesn't have a positive outlook on the war, the press, or the UN "peacekeepers" that were trying to watch over the situation.

yes, it's a good plot, good acting and interesting to see all of the various cultures and languages presented as forces unite to help the stranded soldiers. but i can't help balking at the idea of this beating Amlie in any category. man, i need to buy that movie...it doesn't come out until April 25th??? what!?!?
