ok, i already knew that i didn't really like Akira Kurosawa's films. but this was one of the two left over from the IMDb top 100 list. it's number 75 today. and no i didn't like it. i'm giving it a 3/10. why do you think i saved it until the end? it wasn't good.
the makeup in this movie is terrible. the action scenes are confusing and badly shot, and all of the special effects suck. orange blood? come on. do some damned research. i felt like i was watching The Wild Bunch (1969) all over again. that was an especially orange blood-covered film too, but at least it came out at a time when American culture was asking for it. it was only two years after Bonnie and Clyde (1967). but Ran came out in 1985. was ANYTHING happening in 1985? well i guess this film was produced in Japan though, so i really have no idea what was happening there.
anyway i just don't think i like Kurosawa films. he doesn't write characters well (when he does develop them to any extent). and he forces his actors to overreact to an incredible extent. it's just not believable. and it makes me hate his movies.
