Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)

well i saw that this movie had won Best Foreign Film for 1988 (Italy) and was ranked number 105 on the imdb top 250. it had to be good. it's about a film director who reminisces about his childhood and adolescence spent with a projectionist friend in a small town in Italy around the end of WWII.

well, from the start is was extremely sentimental. which can be good. i thought they jumped into it a little bit quickly though. they didn't establish the characters whose lives we were supposed to find beauty in...they just started showing us that those lives were full of splendor. another problem was that scenes did not tie together very well. and the editing was somewhat bad.

the cinematography on the other hand was very good. lots of great craning shots in the darkened movie house, and the shot where we follow the thread out of the window is just awesome. and some of the sentimentality, especially about watching movies in general, i could really identify with. a nice movie, but it could've been better. 7/10.
