*preparation for star wars

well, in preparation for Attack of the Clones, coming out next month, I've already started to read my copy of the book. it's pretty cool so far. they really just jump right into the action in this one. i'm expecting a lot out of it. there are at least three movie references i've noticed that will appear in Episode II.

Doctor Zhivago (1965)

cover

excellent film. number 39 on the AFI List of top 100 films list. i own a copy. Varykino is the name of the place where Lara and Yuri fall in love. it is also the place where Anakin and Padme fall in love.

Django (1966)

cover

a "spaghetti western" by Sergio Corbucci. i haven't seen it yet because I only noticed its existence today. Boba Fett's father (appearing for the first time in Episode II) is named Jango Fett. based on this western hero at all? possibly. i'll try to review it before May 16 when Episode II comes out. if i can find a copy...

The Searchers (1956)

cover

a wonderful western by John Ford. also number 96 on the AFI top 100 films list. number 106 on the imdb top 250. John Wayne. his daughter gets abducted by Comanche indians. he decides that, rather than have her grow up as a savage, he must seek out and kill her. there is also this awesome shot of his character Ethan looking over a burning homestead. both of these items play heavily into the plot of Episode II. you gotta see The Searchers.
