Y tu mam tambin (2001)

a.k.a. And Your Mother Too. i decided, along with friends, to go see this new indie Mexican film i had heard some good reports about. i also knew that whoever it was that directed it had done another film that i liked the style of within the past few years. turns out the director is named Alfonso Cuarn and he directed Great Expectations (1998) for 20th Century Fox.

i think this movie taught me half of what i now know about Mexico. obviously i know very little. amazing how little you hear about Mexico and Mexican life growing up in America and right next to the country. the film had lots of hand-held cinematography and i liked it in this context. i have no idea why. they made no excuses about it either, which was nice. i love the shot where the cameraman is in one car, tracking alongside the car with the main characters in it, then goes ahead and passes two slow moving vehicles, turning around to follow the important car, and then waiting for it to reenter the lane once they pass the slow movers. wow, i seriously doubt that description made sense. oh well, i'm leaving it. and the narration was great. one of the main lines that gave it away for me was one of their rules they live by: "the truth is amazing, but you can never get to it." for me, the narrator told us the sometimes inconsequential, sometimes harsh truths of the story. that was wonderful for me. this gets an 8/10. lots of 8s this week...ah, well that means very good...and i for one don't mind watching very good films.
