Very Bad Things (1998)

my friend Anne recommended this to me a while back. ok, quite a while back. but this one was surprisingly hard to find the last time i looked for it, so it took a while for me to see it. she said that she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. i totally agree. it's a black comedy. black comedies are almost always on the edge of being bad. they can also be exquisitely good though.

well, the bad things are mostly murders. sometimes premeditated, sometimes accidental. the basic premise is that 5 friends are going to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. when one of them accidentally causes the death of a stripper, they make so much noise that a guy from hotel security stops by their room. he quickly discovers the body and tries to control the situation. it's hard to do though when Christian Slater runs up and stabs you with a corkscrew. they take the bodies out to the desert and bury them in a rather insane style. when they return to society, the group quickly starts to cave under the pressure and the guys who are not panicking start killing those who are. lots of murder and absurdity.

well, i finished the movie with my jaw literally hanging open. i was baffled at how absurd this movie was, especially for the last 15 minutes or so. it's interesting how this movie actually starts makes you consider that murder really isn't that far-fetched of an idea. it's like once you get it into your head that it's ok, it can be hard to stop. sort of like being in a war i guess. it's hard to come back to normal society after something like that. so i guess this movie made me think a little bit. mostly it just shocked me though with its riskiness.
